Holistic medicine solving for orthopedic problems

Naturopathic physician uses traditional healing

by Andrew Kirk, OF THE PARK RECORD STAFF, March 3, 2010

Marc Loveman, a part-time Newpark resident, is really excited to start cross-country skiing soon. That's not such a big deal to many, but he was close to a hip and knee replacement surgery only weeks ago.

Loveman led an active lifestyle participating in triathlons, tennis tournaments, downhill skiing, golfing and more. It kept him in good shape, but took a toll on his joints. Doctors recently told him surgery was his only option.

Not wanting to go under the knife, he tried various physical therapies, but kept getting worse until he was climbing stairs backwards or on fours.

Someone recommended he try Dr. Thad Jacobs, a new naturopathic physician and orthopedic acupuncturist.

Jacobs gave him some injections, strong supplements and exercises to do on his own. After only three weeks, Loveman said he can't believe the results. Before, he could only bend his knees two inches, now he can go all the way down to the floor. He started lifting weights at 10 pounds. Now he's quadrupled his repetitions and the weight.

"I now have a range of motion," he said. "I feel he's a great alternative and very intelligent. He recognized and diagnosed the problem immediately."

Jacobs and his wife Dr. Trevor Holly Cates had a practice in Santa Barbara, Calif., but they and their children found themselves coming to Utah to ski more often than visiting the beach so they moved here permanently. While the kids practice ski racing, Jacobs and his wife work on building their individual practices.

Jacobs is in the Mountain Sage Clinic in Prospector and specializes in acupuncture and Prolotherapy. The latter is a regenerative therapy in which he injects a formula into joints to stimulate the body to re-grow or strengthen ligaments, tendons and cartilage. He said it works well on people with arthritis and gives people like Loveman younger knees.

"With all our athletes here, it can heal up and strengthen joints and give them a competitive edge and bring their game up," he said. "It's almost like stem-cell therapy because it stimulates cells to create a new healthy structure."

But naturopathic medicine also requires more from the patient. It addresses healing from a nutritional and fitness perspective as well. That's why Jacobs believes it will be the next wave in health trends. The entire health care industry is beginning to embrace the importance of full-body health and preventative medicine.

Like other naturopathic physicians, Jacobs uses natural and traditional approaches to solving hormone imbalances, obesity, diabetes, gastro-intestinal disorders, weak immune systems and other ailments.

"You have to treat the whole person. A symptom is usually just a tip of the iceberg," he said. "Everything is connected in some way so I'm focused on optimizing health."

Jacobs said he's now accepting new patients and offers free telephone consultations to talk about his treatments. He's also opening an office in Holladay to serve the Salt Lake Valley.

A medical doctor only has time to spend a few minutes with each patient; Jacobs said he holds patients' hands through a treatment plan that addresses the bigger picture with an individual's health.

Want to Lose Weight? Lose Waste First!

Shedding unhealthy fat is a big step toward better health. However, you might consider getting “clean” first with a short metabolic detoxification regimen. It could make a difference in how you feel, and help you meet your body composition and health goals even faster.
A greater percentage of lean muscle benefits general health and well-being—and reduces your risk to diabetes and heart disease. But that unwanted fat stores environmental pollutants your body can’t keep up with through normal elimination. Some research suggests that fat loss may increase circulating and stored pollutants, which could slow your metabolism by decreasing energy production and influencing multiple body functions. This may explain why some people reach a “plateau” and fail to make further progress in meeting their lean body goals. And why others develop symptoms associated with excess pollutants when they lose fat, dragging them down and making them feel worse...not better.
Clear the path for a cleaner, leaner you. Environmental overload has been suggested as an important consideration before starting any body composition program. A brief “detox” (often 10 days or less) provides scientifically tested nutrients to support your body’s metabolic detoxification process—to help it catch up with any overload and keep you feeling good. It may also help remove obstacles that stand in your way of getting leaner and healthier.
Can a short metabolic detoxification regimen and body composition program help you? Please contact the office to set up an appointment. We’ll help you get cleaner, leaner, and healthier!

Posted: 10/06/2009 04:14:47 PM MDT

Dr. Trevor Holly Cates is a different kind of doctor. For starters, her name is Trevor…what can she say other than her parents liked the name?

Next, she is a primary-care physician who practices naturopathic medicine. Her specialty is integrating traditional family medicine with natural, herbal and environmental remedies. She can prescribe drugs if she needs to, but she usually prefers to start with a consultation on nutrition and talk about homeopathic remedies.

If you've never heard of an "N.D." it's because there are only about five schools in the nation. During her four years of graduate education she received much of the same training as traditional physicians. She just happens to be an expert on diet, homeopathy, environmental medicine and herbal remedies, too.

Instead of diagnosing a problem and prescribing a pill, Cates says she's interested in overall health and optimal wellness. If you suffer from a headache, Cates wants to know what you eat, your personal and family medical history, your exposure to toxins and about the stresses in your life. An initial consultation usually lasts about 90 minutes, she said.

"It's like solving a mystery or finding a piece to a puzzle. What's the underlying problem and what's the best way to treat it?" she explained.

Naturopathic physicians like to think of themselves as "the doctors who listen," she said.

Patients often come to her with chronic problems or symptoms no one else has been able to relieve. She welcomes those cases, but is also comfortable treating women's hormonal problems, children's allergies, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, anything on the autism spectrum, digestive problems, ear infections, thyroid problems, infertility, fatigue, sleep problems and asthma, to name a few.

Allergies are one of her favorite problems to treat because it's what got her into the field.

Growing up on an organic farm in Virginia, at age 11 she developed terrible allergies to everything. She had chronic infections, tonsillitis, strep throat and other problems. She had surgeries, took medications, saw specialists. Nothing worked until she tried homeopathy. That made her a believer.

Several years later during her senior year in college she saw a television special on naturopathic medicine and realized that's where she wanted to be.

Parkite Linda Klug decided to see Cates after she couldn't find good remedies for her dry skin shortly after moving here. She said Cates has helped her solve that problem with simple Vitamin E. Klug said she's also nervous about receiving flu vaccines so Cates is helping her strengthen her immune system as an alternative.

"One of the things I like best is her manner. She's perfectly suited for mothers and children. She's extremely caring, patient and knowledgeable about alternative medicines for children," she said.

Help with her toddler has been especially helpful since over-the-counter medications for illness are not recommended for children under age two, Klug said.

Heidi Gatch went to Cates for a consultation after meeting her in town and discussing vegetarianism.

"My experience was nice; she was attentive and focused. She seems to care about what you're saying and really listens to you," Gatch said. "Her suggestions were logical, straightforward and genuine."

Dr. Trevor Holly Cates

H1N1 Flu Infection Prevention

Vaccination has its benefits, but do the risks associated with the H1N1 vaccine outweigh the benefits? The research indicates that the main groups targeted by manufacturers to take the flu vaccine are the most likely to suffer severe side effects, including:

Pregnant women

Children over the age of 6 months with chronic health conditions

Adults with chronic health conditions such as chronic respiratory disease, asthma, or obesity

According to a vaccine manufacturer's package insert, these side effects include life-threatening and debilitating Guillain-Barre Syndrome, vasculitis, paralysis, anaphylactic shock and death. Although these adverse side effects are rare, you and your doctor must determine the appropriateness of the H1N1 flu vaccine if you fall into any of the groups listed above or have a severe medical condition.

For people who refuse vaccination or are poor candidates for vaccination due to a medical condition, flu may thwarted by basic hygiene and diet and lifestyle approaches. Basic hygiene involves not touching your face or mouth with unwashed hands, sneezing or coughing into a handkerchief which you DO NOT share with anyone else, and frequent hand washing or use of hand sanitizers, particularly before meal time. A few lifestyle modifications discussed in this blog, such as healthy diet, managing stress, and supplementing with vitamin D and colostrum, may also go far in preventing disease.

Influenza vaccination contraversy is widespread, mainly because the safety and effectiveness of the flu vaccine is still unproven. Despite ever-increasing numbers of people getting flu vaccines every year, mortality rate from seasonal flu has remained steady for the last 20 years. In addition to evidence suggesting the vaccination it is generally not effective, there remains big questions regarding the safety of adjuvants and preservatives added to these injections. For a very good overview on how flu vaccines are designed and produced, as well as the evidence that directly goes against current media and government policies on vaccination, see the video below. I also recommend you read the interview by Tom Jefferson, MD, http://medicalconsumers.org/2009/09/24/why-the-h1n1-virus-is-not-a-major-threat/. With colleagues at the Cochrane Collaboration, Dr. Jefferson has co-authored over 10 Cochrane reviews to answer a wide range of questions such as: do these vaccines reduce the chance of getting influenza or reduce the risk of complications, hospitalizations and deaths in elderly people, children, healthy adults and asthmatics? (FYI: The Cochran Collaboration is a group of over 10,000 volunteers in more than 90 countries who review the effects of health care interventions. The results of these systematic reviews are published as "Cochrane Reviews" in the Cochrane Library.)

Also, be sure to read about preventive health measures that follow so you can combat the flu this season.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCBlxqmOMKM&feature=player_embedded#t=507

Healthy Diet Prevents Flu

Put down that donut! A sugary diet suppresses important immune system cells responsible for fighting infections.1,2 In fact, it has been shown that a single sugary snack can suppress immune activity up to 48 hours after sugar exposure. Refined grains, such as white flour, likely has a similar effect when eaten because of how rapidly the carbohydrate in these foods are absorbed into the bloodstream. Limiting sugar and refined carbohydrate intake is not only good for preventing flu and other infections, it's good for your health in general. Common sugary food sources are sodas, juices, honey, condiments, candies and many baked goods.

Some basic healthy dietary guidelines include:

Do not over-eat.

Eat a variety of foods.

Consider organically grown food.

Eat as much of your food raw or lightly-cooked as possible.

Eat fresh fruit and vegetables.

Avoid drinks containing sugar or caffeine.

Avoid sugars.

Avoid processed and refined foods; particularly refined grain flours and foods made with them.

Avoid hydrogenated trans-fatty acids.

Use only certain oils for cooking and frying; such as olive oil, for low-temperature cooking, or grape seed oil, for high-temperature cooking.

Limit animal protein intake in the form of red meat, chicken, pork, eggs and dairy to a few ounces per day.

Eat whole grains, pseudograins, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Eat more fish.

With regard to eating fish, it is recommended to avoid fish known to contain unsafe levels of heavy metals and other chemical pollutants. The fish to avoid are tuna, Atlantic salmon, farmed salmon, sea bass, oysters, marlin, halibut, pike, walleye, white croaker, largemouth bass, shark, swordfish and fish know to be from polluted waters. The safest fish to eat are small fish varieties, such as anchovies and sardines, and those grown in minimally polluted areas like the Arctic, Antarctic or Alaskan waters. Wild northwestern US, Canadian and Alaskan salmon and halibut are good choices. Arctic white fish and farmed tilapia are known to be significantly less effected by pollution too.

Stress Can Make You Sick

Stress is a well-known contributor to many types of illnesses. Flu and other infections are higher in individuals who report higher levels of life stress and anxiety. Cortisol is a hormone released in higher amounts when one experiences excessive physical or emotional stress. Cortisol helps us adapt to acute bouts of stress and inflammatory conditions, but prolonged exposure to high amounts circulating in the system inhibits normal immune system cell function.3-7

A bad night's sleep can make you sick too. Sleep quantity and sleep efficiency, which is a sleep science term used to describe how well you fall asleep and say asleep, also appears to be crucial in preventing airborne illnesses such as the common cold.8 Sleep is vital to health, and the evidence to date show that not only does sleep disturbance increase colds, it also increases pro-inflammatory chemicals released by the body, which contribute to atherosclerosis, allergies and other inflammatory conditions. If you have sleep issues, then contact our office to make an appointment. There are ways to naturally restore this vital health component.

There are many ways to manage stress to encourage healthy immune system function and health and well-being in general. Eating a healthy diet and getting regular aerobic exercise are the foundation for supporting physical and mental health. Stress management should be individualized to meet your specific needs; therefore, discuss ways to deal with stress with a health care provider who specializes in this area.

Vitamin D May Prevent H1N1

Vitamin D has been shown in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial to prevent colds and flu. Vitamin D, which is actually not a vitamin at all but a hormone, plays a crucial role in the production of antimicrobial compounds in the fluids that coat and lubricate the respiratory tract. Vitamin D deficiency is well associated with increased disease risk and supplementation has been shown to enhance immunity in many studies.

To treat active infection and prevent disease after recent exposure, I recommend taking very high doses of vitamin D to promote naturally occurring antibiotic compounds produced in the body. One thousand international units (1,000 IU) per pound of body weight can be used during active infections. Five to ten thousand international units (5,000-10,000 IU) can be used daily by adults preventively, but a blood test should be given after a two months to determine if this dose provides adequate protection.

For a more in-depth explanation of Vitamin D's important disease-fighting role in relation to preventing H1N1 illness, I hightly recommend you read the views of vitamin D authority, Dr. John Cannell, MD. http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/newsletter/h1n1-flu-and-vitamin-d.shtml

Colostrum May Prevent H1N1

Colostrum is the first milk produced by a cow around the time of giving birth. It is rich in immunoglobulins (antibodies) and other components needed to support healthy immune function of the calf. Colostrum-derived immunoglobulins likely account for the majority of the immune system enhancing effects seen in colostrum studies.

Authors of a 2007 Italian study concluded, "Colostrum, both in healthy subjects and high-risk cardiovascular patients, is at least 3 times more effective than vaccination to prevent flu and is very cost-effective."9 The study also revealed that colostrum was 3 times more effective than no vaccine prophylaxis. In fact, the flu vaccine was actually found to be worse than doing nothing at all; suggesting that the vaccine was the incorrect recombinant and the well-known immunosuppressive effect of vaccines played a role in predisposing individuals to another flu strain.

It is unknown whether colostrum would be effective against H1N1 specifically, but it sheds light on a potential new, inexpensive, food-based H1N1 prevention and treatment strategy.

What to do If You Get the Flu

Make an appointment with either Dr. Cates or Jacobs as soon as possible. The sooner infection is addressed, the better. There are several effective ways to both soothe flu symptoms and kill-off the virus after it takes hold. The flu usually only lasts up to a few days, but how severe an infection will get is difficult to predict. In general, be sure to follow the following guidelines:

Fluids, fluids, fluids. Fluid intake very important, as flu sufferers lose more fluids from fever than they think. Drink plenty of water and vegetable broth to replenish fluids and electrolytes. Chicken soup work great too!

Sleep. Your body is probably telling you to sleep anyway - listen to it! Lack of proper sleep might have been what got you into this situation in the first place, and lack of sleep certainly won't help you get out of it.

Food. Even though you may not feel like eating, adequate nutrition is essential to feeling better and recovering more quickly. Again, chicken soup not only helps keep the fluids up, it is easy to digest and has been shown to have anti-viral, antibiotic and decongestant properties. Two servings of homemade chicken soup is recommended. I've provided a homemade chicken soup recipe after the References section below.

Minimal exertion. Even if you don't feel like sleeping, it's far better to stay in bed and relax than trying ineffectively to take it easy at work (and no one wants to catch the flu from you, either).

Keep an eye on that fever. Call our office if your child's fever remains at or above 103 degrees for more than 1 day. For adults, more that 2 days. Call our office immediately at flu onset if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy beyond the first trimester, lung disease or asthma.

Medications. Depending on your symptoms and the type of flu you have, we will prescribe a different homeopathic remedy, herbs and so forth in addition to the standard antibiotic and antiviral supplements we recommend patients keep in their medicine cabinets. It is best to consult with us so that you can recover more quickly and with fewer flu-related complications.

1 small (5lb) chicken* or leftover carcass of large whole chicken, with bones and skin (protein, amino acids)

4 cloves minced garlic (blood cleanser, liver tonic, vitamins C and B6, selenium)

1/8 cup olive oil (oleic acid and other fatty acids help control cholesterol, vitamin E, phenol antioxidants, benefits for colon, heart, and liver)

2 cups chopped carrots (alpha- and beta-carotene, vitamin A, fiber)

2 cups chopped celery

1 large onion, chopped (flavonoid antioxidants, blood cleanser)

2 cups chopped red potatoes (B vitamins, carbs, potassium)

Salt & pepper to taste

Spice options: Thyme, Dill, Cilantro, Curry, Tumeric 1-2 tsp each or any to taste

Cut chicken into two or four pieces, place in a large pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a boil and remove the fat that accumulates on top. Add the spices, garlic, onion, carrots, celery and potatoes. Cook on medium-low for about 1.5 hours. Remove the chicken and pull the meat off of the bones with a fork (remove the skin and any skin remaining inside the pot). Pour a little olive oil on top before serving.

* Organically grown chicken is preferred.

<blurb>NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older adults who regularly eat fish may have a lower risk of subtle brain damage that contributes to stroke and dementia -- as long as the fish isn't fried -- researchers reported Monday.</blurb>

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older adults who regularly eat fish may have a lower risk of subtle brain damage that contributes to stroke and dementia -- as long as the fish isn't fried -- researchers reported Monday.

In a study that followed 3,660 adults age 65 and older, Finnish researchers found that those who ate more fish were less likely to show certain "silent" brain infarcts -- tiny areas of tissue that have died because of an insufficient blood supply -- on an MRI scan.

The tissue damage is considered silent, or "subclinical," because it causes no obvious symptoms and can only be detected through brain scans. It can, however, raise a person's longer-term risk of having a stroke or developing dementia.

Among older adults in the current study, those who said they ate tuna and "other" baked or broiled fish at least three times per week were one-quarter less likely than those who rarely ate fish to have subclinical brain infarcts at the study's start.

Fish eaters also tended to be less likely to develop new infarcts over the next five years.

No such benefits were linked to consumption of fried fish, however, the researchers report in the journal Neurology.

While the study cannot conclusively point to the reason for the brain benefits, it's likely that omega-3 fatty acids -- healthy fats found mainly in oily fish -- play a key role, according to Dr. Jyrki K. Virtanen and colleagues at the University of Kuopio.

When the researchers estimated study participants' intake of two major omega-3 fatty acids -- EPA and DHA -- they found a link between higher intake and lower risk of silent brain infarcts.

In addition, the researchers note, the lack of a protective effect from fried fish may stem from the fact that foods like fish burgers and fish sticks are typically made from fish low in omega-3.

Overall, the findings add to evidence that fish rich in omega-3 fats -- like salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna -- may have "important health benefits," the researchers write.

"Previous findings have shown that fish and fish oil can help prevent stroke, but this is one of the only studies that looks at fish's effect on silent brain infarcts in healthy, older people," Virtanen said in a written statement.

"More research is needed as to why these types of fish may have protective effects, but the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA would seem to have a major role." Virtanen added.

Silent brain infarcts can raise a person's risk of both stroke and cognitive decline. It's estimated that about 20 percent of adults age 65 and up who are free of silent infarcts will develop at least one within five years.

The American Heart Association recommends that all adults strive to eat at least two fish meals per week, preferably fatty fish, for the sake of their cardiovascular health.

<blurb>A small study showed that probiotic, or "good" bacteria in a daily drink can change the immune system's response to grass pollen, a common cause of allergies, and balance antibodies in a way that may provide relief to people with the condition.</blurb>

LONDON (Reuters) - A probiotic drink a day may help keep hay fever away, British researchers said on Tuesday.

A small study showed that probiotic, or "good" bacteria in a daily drink can change the immune system's response to grass pollen, a common cause of allergies, and balance antibodies in a way that may provide relief to people with the condition.

"These data show that probiotic supplements modulate immune responses...and may have the potential to alleviate the severity of symptoms," Claudio Nicoletti and colleagues at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, Britain, reported in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy.

Probiotics contain live microorganisms, so-called good bacteria that colonize the intestine. They are sold as supplements but are also found naturally in many fermented foods, including yogurt and certain juices.

Humans normally carry several pounds of bacteria in their intestines and they are key to digestion, immune system function and possibly play other beneficial roles. They can also out-compete "bad" bacteria that may cause disease.

"The probiotic strain we tested changed the way the body's immune cells respond to grass pollen," added Kamal Ivory, a researcher who worked on the study.

In the study volunteers with a history of seasonal allergies drank a daily milk drink with or without Lactobacillus casei -- a bacteria widely studied for its beneficial properties -- over a five-month period.

The researchers took blood samples before the grass pollen season, at its peak and after the end of season. They found that people who had been drinking the probiotic drink had lower levels of an antibody that help produce allergy symptoms.

At the same, these people also had higher levels of a different antibody, called IgG that may play a protective role against allergic reactions.

These changes may reduce the severity of symptoms, something the researchers said they plan to test further. They also cautioned that the findings came from a small study and more work was needed

<blurb>When a pregnant woman needs to be treated for major depression, "the possible risks and benefits of antidepressant medication are considered to have significant impacts on both mother and baby,"</blurb>

By Michelle Rizzo

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - For pregnant women diagnosed with major depressive disorder, treatment with omega-3 fatty acid supplements may reduce depressive symptoms, according to the findings of a small clinical trial.

"Perinatal depression is common, and treatment remains challenging," Dr. Kuan-Pin Su, of China Medical University Hospital, Taiwan, and colleagues explain in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

When a pregnant woman needs to be treated for major depression, "the possible risks and benefits of antidepressant medication are considered to have significant impacts on both mother and baby," Su commented to Reuters Health. "Many women and their health care providers prefer the use of non-medication treatments," Su added.

"Depression has been reported to be associated with the abnormality of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)," the team notes in their article. They propose that the requirements of the growing baby lead to "a profound decrease of omega-3 PUFAs in the mother during pregnancy," and this might "precipitate the occurrence of depression."

To see if omega-3 supplements would help, the researchers assigned 36 pregnant women with depression to take 3.4 grams of omega-3 PUFAs or an inactive placebo daily for eight weeks.

No antidepressants or other mood-altering drugs were given for one month before the study began or during the study. A total of 24 women completed the study -- 13 in the treatment group and 11 in the placebo group.

Patients given omega-3 PUFAs had significantly lower scores on a standardized depression scale after 6 and 8 weeks compared with those who received placebo. Furthermore, depression improved significantly in 62 percent of the women in the omega-3 group compared with 27 percent of those in the placebo group

The omega-3 supplements were well tolerated. Adverse events related to treatment included insomnia, nausea and diarrhea, but no pregnancy complications were reported, and there were no adverse effects on the newborns.

However, Su cautioned that before omega-3 fatty acids can be considered as a primary treatment for depression in pregnant women, the results need to be replicated in larger studies. Furthermore, the researcher added, the optimal dosage and type of omega-3 PUFAs "need to be determined for this specific population."
